Mairi is aided in her escape from her persecutors by Neil and the hermit Brother Durston, who we first met in Weapons of the Wolfhound. Together they seek for the truth. Who are these ancient people? Are they from the West - the legendary land Saint Brendan had sailed to in the sixth century, the Vinland of the Vikings, the North America of the present day? Where did the white horse come from?
