Captain Robert Fleming, pilot and engineer, has been grounded because he showed the 'white feather' on his last flight and had to have co-pilot Trueman land the plane. What disturbed him most is that he cannot remember a thing about that flight - he has amnesia - and now seems to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown as he visits Airport Supervisor Scrivens in the Control Tower of London Airport. While there, Scrivens is interrupted by Forbes who has just found, on the perimeter track past the boundary lights, a piece of the hydraulic gear from the undercarriage of the last jet that took off that evening. There were also the remains of a wheel and other odds and ends. If this is true, the pilot won't be able to land because the undercarriage will be at right angles of the line of flight when the pilot lowers it.The only way to save the plane and its 70 passengers is to do some engineering in flight and the person who knows the jet best is Robert Fleming. He finds out that the co-pilot on the plane is Jimmy Trueman, the only witness to his 'crack-up' and the man who just stole his girlfriend, Julie. Now it's up to Fleming to find a way to save Trueman and the rest of the passengers before Statelines Flight 46 has to land in New York.
