Uryū uses the forbidden Quincy technique Ransōtengai to overcome the effects Mayuri's zanpakutō and defeats him, receiving the antidote of his opponent's poison from Mayuri's lieutenant Nemu Kurotsuchi. However, Uryū is quickly defeated by Squad Nine Captain Kaname Tōsen and incarcerated. As Ichigo faces a life and death training regiment against Zangetsu to obtain the ability to use Bankai, Kenpachi helps Orihime free her friends so he can find Ichigo and fight him again.
